Can You Get a Brow Lamination If You Use Retinol?
You booked your Brow Lamination. You’re ready for fluffy, lifted, perfectly shaped brows.
Then I ask:

“Are you using retinol?”
And suddenly I get the look.
“Ummm… I used it last night. Is that bad?”
If you’re wondering about brow lamination and retinol, don’t panic. It doesn’t mean you have to break up with your skincare routine forever just because you want great brows.
But what you’re putting on your skin before your appointment matters—a lot.
And retinol isn’t the only one.
First, Check Your Bathroom Cabinet
At Barely There Beauty Bar, I ask that you stop using certain active skincare products in and around your brow area for 7 days before your Brow Lamination.
That includes:
Retinol • Retinal • Retin-A / Tretinoin • Differin / Adapalene • Tazorac / Tazarotene • Glycolic Acid • Lactic Acid • Salicylic Acid • Vitamin C
Yes, Vitamin C too.
And yes, even if you’ve been using your product forever and your skin “is totally used to it.”
The issue isn’t whether you normally tolerate the product. It’s whether I want to put your skin through a brow service when something you’re using could make that skin more sensitive.
I don’t.
“But Sara, It’s Just My Eyebrows.”
I know. 😂
But your brow hairs are attached to skin, and that skin matters.
Brow Lamination uses chemical solutions to reshape the brow hairs. Your appointment may also involve shaping or waxing around the brows.
If your skincare has made that area more sensitive, waxing can become a completely different situation. Skin can lift. Irritation can happen. And that’s not the kind of before-and-after either of us wants.
Beautiful brows aren’t worth compromising your skin.
Retinol vs. Accutane: Very Different Conversation
This one is important.
Retinol and prescription topical retinoids are one thing.
Accutane / isotretinoin is another.
If you’re currently taking isotretinoin—or you’ve taken it within the last 6 months—please don’t book a Brow Lamination at Barely There Beauty Bar yet.
Barely There Beauty Bar uses a conservative 6-month safety policy for Brow Lamination and Halal Brows. Waxing should also be avoided while taking isotretinoin and for six months after stopping it.
This isn’t one of those things where we say, “Eh, let’s see how your skin looks.”
We wait.
“What If I Used Retinol Last Night?”
Tell me.
Seriously. That’s it.
Don’t hide it because you really want your brows done. 😂
Contact me before your appointment and tell me exactly what you used and when you used it.
Sometimes we may need to reschedule. Sometimes the service may need to be modified. What I don’t want is for you to arrive, get comfortable in my chair, and then tell me you used tretinoin the night before.
I’d much rather figure it out before you make the trip.
And It’s Not Just Skincare
There are a few other things I need to know before I laminate your brows.
Your last Brow Lamination needs to have been at least 8 weeks ago.
Your brow hairs shouldn’t be severely dry, brittle, breaking, damaged, or overprocessed.
And the skin around your brows shouldn’t be peeling, sunburned, broken, infected, severely irritated, or compromised.
Recent chemical peels, laser treatments, microneedling, certain medications, and antibiotics can matter too.
Basically, if something has been happening to the skin around your brows lately, I want to know about it.
You can review the complete Service Contraindications before scheduling:
Why Am I So Picky About This?
Because I’ve been doing brows for a very long time.
My job isn’t just to give you beautiful brows that day. It’s to know when your skin or brow hairs are telling me not today.
Sometimes the best service I can give a client is refusing to perform the service she booked.
I’d rather have you mildly annoyed with me because we had to reschedule than send you home with compromised skin or damaged brow hairs.
Your brows will still be there next week. 😉
So… Can You Get a Brow Lamination If You Use Retinol?
Yes—but you need to prepare for it.
At Barely There Beauty Bar, stop the active skincare products listed above in and around your brow area for 7 days before your appointment.
If you’re taking Accutane/isotretinoin, recently stopped it, aren’t sure what’s in your skincare, or just looked at your serum bottle and thought, uh-oh…
Ask me before you book.
No judgment.
I’d much rather answer the question beforehand than discover the answer when you’re already in my chair.
Before scheduling, please review my Service Contraindications for the complete list of medications, skincare, treatments, and conditions that may affect your appointment:
